It was horrific. I'm not sure how Anna was OK with it. So many of those Judy Blume/Beverly Cleary books are crazy. The kid's dad in this book gets mugged on the subway and it's no big deal. That's at the beginning. At the end, his 3-year-old brother eats his turtle, and no one cares about the fact that he lost his beloved pet. They're all too concerned about his brother. They make it better, but I don't think anything could make it OK that my little brother ate my pet.
Anna wanted to turn right around and start reading it again. On the second pass, I think the little brother has pica: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_(disorder)
Ohhh, : ( That makes me want to cry and I don't even remember that book... how does it end?
